Following a full career in the Army, which saw him serving in Scotland, England, Canada, Germany, Oman, and Algeria he retired to Ayrshire. He worked with the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo company organising the centenary of the outbreak of the First World War on behalf of the Scottish Government. He then worked as Assistant Director General with the War Graves Commission, commuting to Maidenhead from Ayrshire and visiting war graves in France, Belgium, Canada, Egypt, Gallipoli and Italy, as well as managing various projects. Since Oct 2020, he has been working as a consultant to the Sailors Society, managing the closure and sale of a Grade A listed care home in Greenock.
