Councillor Neill Watts was honoured to attend with his fellow Scottish Conservatives colleague Councillor James Adams the Holocaust Memorial Day remembrance event in the Council Chambers at East Ayrshire Council Headquarters in Kilmarnock.

Young representatives from local East Ayrshire Secondary Schools as well as Councillors filled the Chambers for the event. We had presentations from pupils from The Grange Academy, Kilmarnock Academy and St Joseph's Academy.

Councillor Neill Watts was privileged to present a Life story about Arn-Chorn Pond to the chamber.

At Midday a pupil from each of the Academy's present lighted a Candle as part of the remembrance event.

This year’s event was especially poignant as it was the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau, the largest Nazi concentration camp complex, and the 30th anniversary of the genocide in Bosnia.

The theme for 2025 was ‘For A Better Future’ and pupils spoke about the many things we can do meet this aim including speaking up against Holocaust and genocide denial and distortion; challenging prejudice; and encouraging others to learn about the Holocaust and more recent genocides.

Well done to all the young people for their fantastic and moving presentations.
